Who We Are

Hempmill Pottery and Cookery School is a family business run by Richard and Lucy Heeley and is situated on the site of a historic mill on the border of Shropshire and Staffordshire.

The Battle of Blore Heath (1459) was fought along the vale where the Hempmill Brook now flows peacefully through 6 acres of wild gardens and wetland into the River Tern.

Richard and Lucy Heeley want to share their collective years of culinary knowledge and design experience; Hempmill is all about good food, fine craftsmanship and the simple marriage of ingredients and materials.

It currently comprises the Hempmill Pottery, the Stables Gallery and the Hempmill Cookery School.

Meet Lucy

The Chef

Lucy studied Ceramics at Manchester before a career in ceramic restoration. She retrained as a chef at Leiths School of Food and Wine in London in 2010 and has worked as a private chef, food stylist, home economist and teacher.

She now runs informal, informative and enjoyable cookery classes for all abilities on a wide range of subjects.

Meet Richard

The Potter

Richard grew up in the area, and returned recently after 20 years living and working in London as a potter and teacher. He is a full time professional potter and selected member of the Craftsman Potters Association.

He works in blue and white porcelain and wood fired stoneware, and exhibits regularly at the UK’s top ceramics shows.

Our Ethos

Hempmill is all about good food, fine craftsmanship and the simple marriage of ingredients and materials. It is a place for people to learn new skills and have fantastic experiences in friendly and beautiful surroundings.

The Battle of Blore Heath  (1459) was fought along the vale where the Hempmill Brook now flows peacefully through 6 acres of wild gardens and wetland into the River Tern.

The Battle of Blore Heath was the first major battle in the English Wars of the Roses and was fought on September 23, 1459.

Audley’s Cross (pictured left) is next to Hempmill’s grounds, and marks the location where Lancastrian, Lord Audley, was slain during the battle.

Audley’s Cross is protected on The Heritage List (officially the National Heritage List for England or NHLE) as an important site in history.
